Research areas Dr Horan's current research interests involve the host-pathogen interaction, specifically the signalling cascades, involved in macrophage phagocytosis of Mycobacteria. These signalling cascades regulate the initial phagocytosis of Mycabacteria as well as the production of inflammatory cytokines that mediate the immune response. Dissecting the signalling cascades involved during Mycobacteria infection of phagocytosis will provide important insights into the interaction between macrophages and bacteria, perhaps providing novel targets for drug development.
